Spring 2020 After School Class Description

Chinese Performing Arts

Grade K - 2

Location: Cafeteria

Zhang Li is a well known and loved after school teacher at Woodstock. She will be teaching students varied art form of Chinese performing arts, consisting of many modern/ traditional cultural dance genres/ movement and techniques

​

In the Spring term, the students will continue learning the song "Chinese Kung-fu" and learning how to coordinate the body movement with the Chinese language in the song and the rhythm of the music. Compared with the song they learned for the winter term performance, this song is longer, and there are also more words in the lyrics. 

 

The students will also continue receiving training in the basic vocal skills, rhythms of music, and basic breathing techniques associated with singing. To further reinforce these skills, the students will learn to sing three English songs so that they can apply the techniques. For differentiation in the instruction, the students will be divided into small groups based on the characteristics of their voices, and each group will learn to sing different songs.

***Please note the final class for this course will be on Wednesday June 3, 2020 for a performance. There a total of 8 classes for this term with 2 Mondays that are NO SCHOOL Days on April 6th, 2020 and May 25, 2020.

This course aims to engage the students in Grade 3- 5 in the learning of some basic skills in Chinese Performing Arts. The art forms include singing, dancing, ancient poetry reading, and Taichi fan performance. These highly engaging activities will provide students the chance to improve their Chinese language skills, and also have more exposure to Chinese culture at a deeper level.

Ms Chunxiang Li will be the instructor the class. Ms Li was a soloist in a Chinese professional performing troupe before she moved to the US. She has been teaching Chinese vocal and performing arts classes in Portland for 20 years. She has been involved in organizing many Chinese events in Portland including annual Chinese New Year Celebration in Portland and Vancouver, performances in China Town, and Chinese Festival at Pioneer Square, etc. Ms Li Zhang will facilitate the class especially at the beginning.

Advance Chinese Dance

Grade 3-5

Kathy Chun and Zhang Li will be partnering up to provide more advance dance techniques and varied art form of Chinese dance, consisting of many modern and traditional cultural dance genres.
