About Shu Ren

Shu Ren is a volunteer support group geared toward supporting the Chinese portion of the curriculum for students in the Mandarin Immersion Program at PPS, grades K-12.

The character "Shu" means tree, and "Ren" means person. "Shu" also means cultivate, nurture or rear. Together, the characters refer to the belief that it takes 10 years to grow a tree, but 100 years to rear a human being. "Shu Ren" is often used as a title for schools, groups or organizations in China that educate or nurture children. Click here to see the MIP students in action!

Shu Ren events throughout the year include general meetings, potlucks, the Dumpling Festival, Gala Auction, and Chinese New Year events.  Some of the other ways Shu Ren contributes to the experiences of MIP students at Cleveland, Hosford, and Woodstock are: subsidizing the cost of the eighth grade China Research Residency, providing grants to teachers for purchase of Chinese-related classroom supplies and field trips, supporting Chinese homework club after school, hosting classes in Mandarin for parents, supporting families hosting Chinese teachers, and advocating for Immersion parents.
